Cliff and Joyce Quinn Bio

Cliff and Joyce have been in kiting approximately 10 years. They became interested in kiting while vacationing in Ocean City, MD. They stopped in The Kite Loft store on the boardwalk, bought some kite magazines, went home and found out Steve Ferrel’s “Kite Studio” was only a few miles from their house. Further they discovered there was a kite club very close by in Bethlehem, PA. called Lehigh Valley Kite Society (LVKS).

Joyce joined the club 6 months later, after much persuasion from Cliff. She soon became an officer of the club – Secretary – then Vice President of Special Projects – Vice President of Operations – and then served 2 full terms as President and still continues to be on the Board of Directors. Joyce truly enjoys co-coordinating club projects and events. Her favorites are: “ LVKS Annual Kite Day in the Park”, (the first Saturday of May every year, the club’s major fund raiser) and LVKS Kite Building with the little kids at “Longwood Gardens” in Kennett Square, PA, a nationally renowned conservatory/arboretum.

While Cliff’s interests in kiting are designing, building and flying kites, he too enjoys kite building with the little kids.  He has competed in comprehensive kite building competitions at Smithsonian Kite Festivals and AKA National Competitions. He has won awards for kite building at both of these events, the first one being the very first competition he entered (jointly with Joyce) at a Smithsonian Kite Festival and won a First Prize – the coveted “Paul Garber Medallion”.

Together they have attended 8 AKA National Conventions and totally enjoy the kiting and social activities, which they recommend to everyone.  For the past several years Cliff has been a field judge for both these events. Cliff claims that judging is just as rewarding as building kites.
