FLAPPING CROW KITE

This kite flies as a real crow in the sky. Many real crows will attack the crow kite. If you fly this kite near the forest where many crows live, more than two hundreds of crows will attack the kite within five minutes of flying the kite.

You can see the scene in the above center picture. Can you find the flapping crow kite in the picture ?

EList of Materials

1) Sail : Plastic sheet which thickness is 0.03mm with black color.

2) Spar : 1.3mm depth ~ 5mm width ~ necessary length (Bamboo)

3) Adhessive plastic tape (necessary length)

Details of the Plan

1. Paper Pattern

Pattern should be placed on the double sheets of plastic. Right side of the sheet should be doubled. Unit=50mm

2. Details of Keel

3. Details of Horizontal Wing Spar

The most important key point is how to make a spar which has a good balance. The trial and error should be needed until you get a good flying feature.

4. Arrangement of Spars

All spars are assembled with adhessive plastic tapes.

Step-01

Prepare bamboo frames.
(1) A backbone frame : 5mm x 2mm x 600mm
(2) Horizontal frame : 5mm x 1.5mm x 630mm, 440mm, 260mm, one each
(3) Trunk frame : 5mm x 1.5mm x 350mm two pieces
(4) Wing frame : 5mm x 1.5mm x 340mm two pieces
(5) Wing frame : 5mm x 1.5mm x 150mm two pieces
(6) Wing frame : 5mm x 1.5mm x 280mm two pieces
(7) Wing frame : 5mm x 1.5mm x 150mm two pieces
(8) Wing frame : 5mm x 1.5mm x 250mm two pieces
Step-02

Place the pattern on tbe black nylon sheet.
Work on the plywood.
Place the folded side on righthand and place the pattern on the sheet.
Pin the cross point between the horizontal frame and wing frame.
Step-03

Cut the nylon sheet along with the pattern.
At first, cut the sheet along with the straight keel line using cutter.
Step-04

Cut the nylon sheet along with curved line.
Step-05

Cut the nylon sheet along with other straight lines of the wing.
Step-06

Mark the cross point between horizontal frame and wing frame using white ink pen.
Step-07

Spread the sail.
Step-08

Place the double stick tape on the keel top as shown in the photo.
Keep space of 20mm at the top and bottom of the keel top.
Step-09

Leave the protective sheet.
Step-10

Stick two sheet correctly with care.
Step-11

Step-12

Stick both side of wing with plastic adhessive tape.
Step-13

Make holes for eyelets.
Step-14

Make two eyelets.
Step-15

Insert the bamboo stick which diameter is 3mm into the keel.
Step-16

Seal the inlet of stick with plastic adhessive tape in order to prevent coming out of the stick.
Step-17

Put the backbone frame with double stick tape on the center of sail.
The skin side should be upper side of the frame.
Step-18

Reinforce the frame of the upper end and lower end with adhessive tape.
Step-19

Put the straight wing frames with double stick tape.
Reinforce the frame of the upper endand lower end with adhessive tape.
Step-20

Step-21

Put the trunk frames with double stick tape.
Reinforce the frame of the upper endand lower end with adhessive tape.
Step-22

Prepare the horizontal frames.
Step-23

Paste the frames with bond.
Step-24

Fix the frame with clips.
Step-25

Bend the frames using flame of candle or gas oven at the point of cross point between wing frame and horizontal frame.
The bending angle is about 15 - 20 degrees.
Prior to the work, wet the frame in order to prevent burning of the bamboo frame.
Bend a pair of frames together in order to get the same bending angle each other.
Skin side should be outside of the frame.
Step-26

Three pairs of frames should be processed by the same way.
Step-27

Put the curved wing frames with double stick tape on the sail.
Trim the excess frames which protruded out of the sail.
Reinforce the frame of the upper end and lower end with adhessive tape.
Step-28

Attach the strings for flying line by using eylets.
Step-29

Put the horizontal frame with double stick tape on the sail and trim the frame which protruded from the both ends of wing.
Reinforce the frame of both ends and the cross points between horizontal frame and wing frames with adhessive tape.
This kite may be builded in order to be able to hand carry by making horizontal frame to be detachable construction.
You may construct the horizontal frame which is able to be assembled at the site of the kite fly by your own good idea.
Step-30

This crow kite is flying in backyard garden of Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhour, India.
