When the flying is over and it is time to stow all the gear, we need some way of keeping the line on the spool. Some people tuck it in, some people wrap it with everything from webbing to shock cord to duct tape. Here is a simple method to keep the line in place until it is time to fly again.
We are showing it here using a halo type winder, but this works with indian fighter spools and Charlie Hendersen Bobbin and Bill Sonntag Deep Sky type winders too.
If you have one of those Sun Oak type 'reel-in-a-box-with-a-crank' winders, I guess you'll just have to use a swivel......
Step 1: Leave the Lark's Head in the end of the line. Lay it out as it is below.
(Later on, with more experience, you can do this with your eyes closed and won't have to lay it down.)
Notice that the line is coming off the reel on the left side. Now, we pick up the loop of line and put it around the reel.
Again, notice that the line comes off the left side of the reel, gets to the loop, and turns around, it does a U-turn, and goes back down the left side of the reel. Now, all that needs to be done is to tighten the line by moving the spliced loop in the end of the flying line clockwise, to the right.
Now, here's the best part: When it is time to go flying again, loosen up the line, and the Lark's head comes off already tied, ready to put on the flying line!
